Work in my absence

Hi Yr 1 lit ladies,

Although I was in yesterday I'm still feeling rotten today, so need another day to fully recover. Hopefully normal service will resume on Friday!

Today I want you to start focusing on how the 'immigrant experience' is truly represented in Small Island, so complete the following tasks:

Read Chapter 50.
How does Hortense feel before she goes to the interview?
Why do you think Gilbert decides to accompany her?
How is Hortense treated by the women in the office? What language does Levy use to convey their attitudes?
How does Hortense react? What do you make of her response?
Additionally, make sure you're reading as much of the text as possible before Friday, as we're going to be compiling and analysing the key events.

See you Friday

Claudia
Look at the beginning of Chapter 51. What is Gilbert’s response?

College trip to see The Tempest at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon - Amazing opportunity!

Hello ladies,

This year the English department have organised a trip to see an incredible production of The Tempest (which we will be studying!) at the famous RSC in  Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon. This was originally a trip open only to A2 students, however we have decided to open it up to all Literature students on a first come first serve basis. There are 33 places available and this will  sell out, so be quick!

This really will be an absolutely amazing day; not only will you get to see the performance, but throughout the day you will also be participating in workshops with the directors, producers and actors in the production to help your understanding, which will be invaluable when we come to study the play.

To read about the production, click here .

A similar trip was organised last year and every student who went has said it was an incredible once in a lifetime experience.

If you are interested (I cannot recommend it enough!) then here is the info:

The trip will take place on Wednesday 15th December and will be an all day trip. We will be picked up by coach at 7:30am from college and will arrive back to college at around half past midnight (it's a long day but so worth it!)

The cost of the trip is £35, which includes the price of a ticket for the performance and the workshops, along with transport to and from Stratford-upon-Avon.

To pay, you need to log into WisePay (you should all have log-ins for this) so click this link:

http://www.stbrn.ac.uk/info/parents-and-carers/wise-pay-(online-payments)/

and then click the link underneath the blue text (www.wisepay.co.uk) which will take you to the pay portal. Once you are on the WisePay website, click the 'Trip and Visit Payments' icon, and find the trip entitled 'TEMPEST STRATFORD-UPON-AVON' and click 'View Details'. Click the black link to download the letter (please return the slip to me only AFTER you have paid for the trip which will confirm your place). To pay for the trip, click the GREEN link.

I really hope some of you will take this opportunity, you will absolutely love it!

Send me an email at cal@stbrn.ac.uk if you're intending to come or if you are confused about how to book your place on the trip.

Blogs & Paragraphs

Hi everyone,

I'm starting to get your URLs through and am reading your paragraphs. So far the ones I have seen are looking great, so well done on the excellent work.

In order to access my posts quicker you might want to add my blog to your reading list on your blog dashboard. To do this just go to your blogger homepage (blogger.com) and then on the left hand side of the page you should see an orange title which says 'Reading List' with an 'Add' button. Click the 'Add' button and copy and paste my blog URL into the box (claudialitblog.blogspot.com) and then my blog will be added, and you will be able to see on your dashboard when I've made a new post.

As always, any problems send me an email!

Analysis Grid

Hi everyone,

Excellent analytical work in today's lesson! You all made brill observations and it was great to hear so many different perspectives on the text.

On Friday we will be working on writing a more extended piece of analysis of two of the extracts in the booklet, so you can use the two you worked on today or choose two different ones. If you would like a copy of the grid we used in class then click here.

For prep you can start planning how you might respond to the question:

"How a protagonist reacts to the world around them is key to our understanding of their character." In light of this view, consider ways in which writers present their protagonists.

We will go through PEE paragraph writing briefly before you start writing.

See you Friday!

Welcome to my Year 1 Literature class!

Hi everyone,

Welcome to my English Literature Blog! I will update this blog frequently with interesting articles and resources which will help your study of this amazing subject. I will be asking you to update your blogs too, as this will be a great addition to your notes, and computer room lessons will be posted to the blog also.

First, I would like you to set up your own blog. Follow these instructions:

Go to blogger.com and enter your Gmail details. If you don't have Gmail, make an account now (this will also be useful when we use Google Docs in class). Keep a note of your Gmail address and password!

Make your blog, and send me the URL via email to cal@stbrn.ac.uk
Your URL should be something like 'claudiaslitblog.blogspot.com'. If you have something different to this, let me know.

Make your first post! Type up the paragraphs of analysis you completed of the introductions to Catcher in the Rye and Brave New Worldwith any corrections or improvements you would like to make.

Additionally, feel free to use the blog to type up your notes from today's class. As this is a 2 year linear course, the blog is a great resource to keep all of your notes organised chronologically.

Happy reading and happy writing!

Claudia
